Birth: 1856, Ireland Death: Feb. 5, 1902 Columbus Platte County Nebraska, USA From the website at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/county/platte/vitals/vitals1902a.html The Columbus Journal, February 12, 1902 Mrs. John Deegan died at the family residence this city, Wednesday, February 5, at 10 o'clock a.m., of heart trouble. She was born in Ireland, and at about ten years of age, she came to this country in 1856, the family living near Freeport, Ill., moving from there to Darlington, Wisconsin, in 1861. In 1871, she was married to John Deegan, and in 1875 they moved to Platte county. She leaves one brother, living in St. Joseph, Mo., her husband, three sons and three daughters. She had always enjoyed good health during the twenty-seven years of her residence on Shell creek near Platte Center. The sudden death came as a shock to Mrs. Deegan's friends, who sympathize with the husband and children in their sore affliction. Two daughters from Red Lodge, Montana, arrived Saturday. Funeral services were held Sunday at 1:30 at the Catholic church. Misses Margaret and Lilian Deegan of Red Lodge, Montana, came home to attend the funeral of their mother, Mrs. John Deegan, who was buried Sunday afternoon. From the web site: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/county/platte/vitals/vitals1909a.html Columbus Journal, February 17, 1909 John Deegan, a former Columbus resident, passed away at his home in Red Lodge, Montana, Saturday, February 6, after an illness of two days, death resulting from heart trouble. The deceased had up to the time mentioned enjoyed good health, considering his advanced age. The remains were brought to this city Thursday for burial, and the same afternoon funeral services were held in the Catholic church, Father Marcellinius officiating, and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. The deceased was born in Roscrea, county Tipperary, Ireland, May 1836, and at the time of his death was almost seventy-seven years of age. In 1855 he left Ireland and came to America, stopping for a short time in New York, but later moving to Wisconsin, where in 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Rose Duffy, who died in Feburary, 1902. In 1875 accompanied by his wife he came to Platte county, settling on a farm a few miles from Lindsay, where he resided until several years ago when he came to Columbus, purchased a residence in southeast Columbus, where he lived until two years ago, going to Montana, Oregon and other places in the west to visit his children. The children who survive their aged parents are Miss Margaret and Messrs. George and Edward Deegan of Red Lodge, Montana, Miss Ida Deegan of Portland, Oregon, W.J. Deegan of Kirwin, Wyoming, Mrs. M.H. Maher of Hood River, Oregon. Pallbearers who bore the remains to their final resting place were Wm. O'Brien, J.S. Haney, John Curry, Thos. McTaggart, John C. Byrnes and Adam Smith.
