Memories of Howard Adams
James G. Corcoran and his brother Richard Corcoran, left the farm at Rawdon, P.Q., Canada as young men for Pennsylvania to seek their fortunes and to get away from their father who was a strict disciplinarian. These two Corcoran brothers married two Farrell sisters after arriving in America., Mary Ann Farrell and Rose Farrell.
The brothers first opened a grocery store in Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA. They failed at that endeavour. James G. Corcoran then launched Corcoran Construction Co., which became very successful building major enterprises in Pittsburgh such as some of the Wabash railroad terminal. He built his home at 212 North Dithridge St. near St. Paul's Cathedral. In those days, this area was primarily Irish. James G. Corcoran had two sons. Walter F. Corcoran (Grandfather of Howard Adams) and William S. Corcoran. He also raised a young relative, Jean, until her death from diphtheria at age 11.
