WYMORE - John G. Coffey, 76, Wymore, died Saturday morning, May 10, 2003, at the Douglas County Health Center in Omaha. He was born Aug. 1, 1926, at Beatrice and lived his entire life in the home at Wymore that his parents built in 1923. He graduated from Wymore High School in 1944, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II , being honorably discharged on March 17, 1945. He married Shirley M. Tincher of Odell on June 8, 1953, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wymore. He had been a conductor for the Burlington-Northern Railroad and retired in 1991 with 48 years of service. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus at Wymore and American Legion Anderson Post 25 in Wymore. He enjoyed his work with the railroad and his hobbies included traveling, gardening and spending time with his family.
Survivors: wife, Shirley; daughters, Kelly A. Coffey and husband Dale Graves, Elizabeth K. Coffey, all of Omaha, Merry E. Coffey of Wymore, and Jeanne M. Hardin and husband Robert of Blue Springs; sons, James K. Coffey and wife Nancy of Omaha, and John P. Coffey and wife B. Maritza of Lincoln; grandchildren, Eric Graves, Preston, Grady, and Shelby Hardin, Justice, Lindsay, Connor, Sean, and Nicholas Coffey; a brother, Vincent J. Coffey and wife Colleen of Lincoln; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter S. and Mary Ellen (Hogan) Coffey.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, St. Mary's Catholic Church, 11th and H streets, Wymore, Father Dennis Hotovy officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Wymore. There will be a scriptural prayer service, open to the public, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Ninth and K streets, Wymore. The body will lie in state at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Monday and until 10 a.m. Wednesday, and not at the church. Memorials to the church, the Blue Springs Ball Diamond Association, and the Wymore Rescue Unit with Betty Johnson in charge.
