Stanton Memorial Unveiled.
A monument on the plat of Edmond Stanton
at St. Mary's Cemetery was unveiled
yesterday with suitable exercises. Those
already buried there, whose memory the
monument commemorates, are Mrs. Edmond
Stanton and William Stanton. The
members of the Stanton Steamer Company
left the steamer house In chartered cars
with Doring's Band and proceeded to the
Karnam steamer house. New uniforms
were yesterday worn for the first time.
They were presented to the company by
Edmond Stanton. From the Farnam
steamer house the Stanton company
marched to the cemetery.
Rev. J. E. Gllligan and Dennis O'Loughlln
delivered addresses, but the principal
speech waa made by John P. Kelly. He
referred to the service performed as a
fireman by the late William Stanton and
said that it was commendable and proper
for the firemen composing the company of
which he was a member to be present at
the unveiling of a monument in his memory.
Mr. Kelly also spoke of the fact that for
forty years Edmond Stanton, father of
William Stanton, had been a benefactor
of the company, one on whom at any
time the members could call for assistance
and be assured of a prompt response.
Reference waa also made to the service of
Mr. Stanton as a Fire Commissioner of this
city and his service as a volunteer fireman.
Mr. Kelly said that a statue of the late
William Stanton was placed on top of
the monument at the request of the company.
In conclusion Mr. Kelly wished Edmond
Stanton many more years of life and
said that on the records of the Troy Fire
Department the name of Stanton was inscribed
on time's eternal adamant.
The monument was the work of Young &
Sons of this city and is made of New
Westerly granite, it is about thirty feet
high and seven feet square at the base. On
the top is a statue of the late William
Stanton. Chief Byron and Battalion Chief
Magill were present at the unveiling.
