OBITUARY
JOHN STANTON.
John Stanton, head of the Troy
brewinpr establishment which bore
his name and one of the most widely
known and respected members of
the brewing industry in America,
died suddenly in his.home. 254
Washington avenue, Troy, Monday night.
Fifty of Mr. Stanton's life span of
more than 85 years had been spent
in establishing and directing the
business whose absolute head and
presiding genius he continued to be
to the hour of his death. His dealings
with business men in all parts
of the nation during the last half
century had won for him the sobriquet
of "Honest John Stanton," and
as "Honest John" he was known to
the brewing, grain and all other industries,
from coast to coast. Among
the innumerable cities and towns in
which his years ot business dealings
had made his name almost local in
its familiarity in Schenectady.
Mr. Stanton was born in Charle-
ville, County Cork, Ireland, January
15, 1S32, the son of William Stanton
and Mary Danahy. He came to
America when 14 years old, was educ-
ated at and graduated from LaSalle
Institute and then entered "the
grocery business. Fifty-three years'
ago he started on a very small scale,
the business which developed into
the Stanton Brewing Company.
Mr. Stanton, although intensely
active in all movements for the welf-
are of Troy, never sought public-office
and never held one, except when
- as a young man - he represenled the
first ward of Troy in the board of
aldermen. Aside from his business
his great interests in life were his
family and friends and charitable
and humanitarian work. His purse
was always open for the latter purposes
but his giving was marked by unobtrusiveness.
Recognized as one of the ablest men in the
brewing industry and an authority on grains,
whose word frequently has been used forcefully
on the Chicago board of trade, he combined with
his commercial acumen a sturdy honesty
which made his word pass
current in business circles as equal,
to a bond. Among his close personal
friends of many years standing he
ranked George Bhret. the 'New Tork
multi-millionaire brewer, and the
l a t e ' A d o l p h Busch, head of the Anheuser-
Busch Brewing Company. '
Besides his wife, who was formerly
Margaret McKeever, he is survived
by two sons, Edmond F. and John
Stanton, Jr., and by six daughters.
Mrs. John P. Curley, Mrs. Fred Mahony,
Mrs. Michael J. Fitzgerald, Miss
Frances Stanton, Miss Grace Stanton
and Miss Una Stanton, all of
Troy.
