      Willard J Mason, Sr

      Birth: Feb. 12, 1922
      Death: Aug. 9, 2005

      Willard J. Mason Sr., 83, of Midland, died Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 9, 2005, at the MidMichigan Medical Center.

      He was born on Feb. 12, 1922, in Midland, the son of the late Alfred and Marie (Howe) Mason. On Feb. 12, 1944, he married Margaret Neville in Gainsville, Texas. She survives him. He had served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. Willard had been employed by The Dow Chemical Co. as an operator for over 42 years, retiring in 1982.

      A devoted family man, he was a member of the St. Brigid Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing softball and baseball during his younger years, and also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing and traveling.

      Surviving in addition to his wife Margaret, are his children, Willard J. Mason Jr. of Gallatin, Tenn., Ann C. Mason of Jackson and Peggy Magary of Royal Oak; five grandchildren and their spouses, Lisa and Michael Gillikin of New Baltimore, Denise and Scott Barion of Royal Oak, Cari Mason of Lebanon, Tenn., Sue Mason Overmohle and her husband Peter of Bowling Green, Ky. and Willard J. Mason III of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; six great-grandchildren, Katy, Christina, Natalie, Ava, Olivia and Luke; and one brother, William J. Mason of Midland.

      Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, from the St. Brigid Catholic Church. The Rev. Father James Wm. Bessert will officiate, with graveside committal services to follow in the Old Calvary Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by the Midland Area Veterans.

      Willard's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. on today from 5-7 p.m. Visiting hours will conclude with a Christian Vigil Service to be conducted at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Willard's family will also receive friends at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.
